Key Highlight: From Shadows to Evidence - Tracing a Fraud Network Behind a Newly Formed Company

During a vendor due diligence exercise for one of our clients, we were tasked with the job to find more adverse evidence to support the client’s claim against a newly established company in a pre-litigation due diligence. At first glance, the target company had a minimal digital footprint as it was recently incorporated, with almost no operational history or online presence. Shifting our focus, we began tracing the backgrounds of the company’s founders. What emerged was a pattern too suspicious to ignore: each of the individuals had previous ties to a web of corporate affiliations. A significant number of these companies had already been dissolved.

As we investigated these dissolved entities, a consistent trail of misconduct came to light. Several had been named in lawsuits involving fraud. Online forums and review websites revealed evidence pertaining to some grievances from customers who had paid in full for services that were never delivered. The deeper we looked, the clearer it became—these weren’t isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern.

The most telling piece? The same group of founders from the target firm had been in leadership roles at nearly all of these failed ventures.

Key Highlights:Uncovering Hidden Financial Risks Through Market Intelligence

We were investigating a company for a loan provider and found no significant red flags—except for several negative employee reviews concerning delayed salary payments and, at times, complete non-payment. Though these signals were subtle, they warranted further scrutiny. We conducted an extensive online search, including a review of the company’s credit history, but found no other evidence online that the company was facing a crunch.

Recognizing the possibility of deeper financial issues, we reached out to the client with a suspicion that something is wrong with the company and recommended market intelligence checks to the client. Upon approval, we initiated discreet interviews with multiple candidates from the company, positioned under the guise of a fictitious recruitment process. In the interviews, majority of respondents disclosed that senior management had encouraged employees to leave the company, citing financial problems that the company was going through. This was an eye opener and months later, news articles began surfacing online, reporting that the company had been involved in financial misrepresentations.
